Avalanche warning for region Lofoten og Vesterålen Friday 28.01.2022

Danger level 2 - Moderate avalanche danger

Published:
Strong wind will give windslabs in lee areas. A skier or a snow mobile may trigger avalanches in the fresh wind slabs. A possible polar low pressure system might hit the region in the morning and the wind- and precipitation forecast, and hence the avalanche danger, might change.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Thursday 27. January 2022

Mountain weather

Thursday 27. January 2022

6 mm precipitation, up to 12 mm in the most exposed areas. Precipitation as snow. Fresh breeze from northeast, changing to fresh breeze from the northwest during the evening. -10 °C to -2 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Friday 28. January 2022

4 mm precipitation, up to 10 mm in the most exposed areas. Precipitation as snow. Strong breeze from northwest, changing to breeze from the southeast during the evening. -13 °C to -2 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
